Mr. Sullins (known to the boys in the locker room as Howard O) was just what James Monroe needed as a principal in the late fifties. He supported his teachers and was tough enough to handle young men who were feeling their oats. He was confident and assured as he dealt with the feds when complaints were filed about the lack of majorettes in the Chesterfield schools. A real hoot! I also had the pleasure of dining with him and Mabel several years before they died. He was a fine man and will be remembered for his many contributions to public education. Tom Warren,JMHS, 1957

I was appointed by Dr. Sullins as an elementary principal in Chesterfield County Public Schools. His confidence and support of his administrators was evident. His focus on solid and meaningful instruction for students and by excellent teachers was the driving force of our school system.
It was a privilege to work under his direction.

I had the privilege of serving as an Elementary School Principal in Chesterfield County, Va. while Dr. Sullins was Superintendent. He was greatly admired and respected as our educational leader.
Growing up in Caroline County and being familiar with the Fredericksburg/Stafford County area provided Dr. Sullins and me opportunities to reminisce his years working in that area.
After we had both retired, Dr. Sullins enjoyed many years of breakfast with a few former Principals sharing fond memories working in Chesterfield County Public Schools.
I am honored to have crossed paths with Dr. Sullins and shall miss him greatly.

I had the great privilege of working with Dr. Sullins in Parkersburg, WV, as I began my career in administration. And I was honored to be hired by him again when I moved to Chesterfield. He was loved and respected because everyone knew we could count on him to be honest and supportive. His legacy lives on through the students and families who benefited from his even-handed, sensible educational wisdom. He made every community he served a better place.

I am so sorry to read of “Mr. Sullins’” death. My parents and I lived across the street from your family from the late ‘50’s through the ‘60’s. He was my high school principal and later, my school Superintendent after I became a teacher in Chesterfield County. He had a lasting impact on me in such a positive way. May God bring you comfort now and in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Sharon Bryant Rose

We know of no greater principal than Howard Sullins. He became a close friend to all of the class of 1960 from James Monroe High School. Every year he attended our class reunion at our home and always ate the most crabs. He took great pride in the class and let us know it. His example as principal led us to become greater students and citizens. A man of faith that taught us so much be the way he lived his life. Family: Thank you for sharing him with us all these years.

Altho I only knew him for these past 4 years, he did sign my TDHS diploma in 1977, and it tickled him when I showed him. What a wonderful sweet man - always positive and cheerful, and full of good stories from his long career in education. I remember the first time I met him, and our last hug a few days ago, and I will miss him dearly. Condolences and hugs and much love to his family; thank you for sharing your Dad with me Lee.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of "Mr. Sullins" who was a teacher at Bethel High
School when I graduated in 1952. He was not only a great teacher but a good
friend. We had talked several times recently and then when "Cotton" passed
away we talked about him and if we were going to the funeral. I was not able to
make the trip at that time but understand that he go. He was "one of a kind"
and we were so fortunate to have had him for a teacher those many years ago.
He will not be forgotten by so many of us who attended Bethel High School when
he was there. We are all so proud of the many accomplishments that he made
in his lifetime. I am so glad to have been a friend for all these many years and
he will be missed.
May he rest in peace.
